Le programme Rooms consiste en trois dispositifs : Area, Wall et Block. Chacun propose une modalité de programmation de l’espace : Area circonscrit, Wall fragmente et Block condense.
Ces propositions revendiquent leur indépendance vis-à-vis de la structure architectonique. Ils se placent librement dans l’habitat pour laisser s’installer de nouvelles formes de vie.
Ainsi, Gilles Belley propose une autre manière de configurer nos lieux d’habitation en dessinant des éléments qui délimitent sans figer, agrègent plusieurs fonctions, privatisent une pièce dans la pièce…
Le programme Rooms s’inscrit dans la culture du mouvement : tout est modulaire, démontable, transportable à plat. Le dessin s’appuie structurellement sur la logique d’assemblage de panneaux, propre à la grande majorité de production actuelle du mobilier contemporain. Les process de mise en oeuvre requis prennent en compte la réalité de production à grande échelle.
Né en 1974, Gilles Belley est diplômé de l’ENSCI/Les Ateliers en 2001, avec un projet de station radio et de signalétique pour les autoroutes. Après quelques années de collaboration avec Éric Benqué et une mission auprès de R&E Bouroullec, il débute en 2005 ses activités en nom propre avec des projets industriels pour Plastic Omnium (gamme de poubelles de tri sélectif ), des projets de recherche (EDF R&D) et de scénographie (Mémorial de la Shoah).
Il reçoit le Grand Prix de la création de la Ville de Paris, section design, en 2008. En 2009, il est lauréat de la bourse Agora pour le design pour le développement du projet « La fabrique végétale » initié avec le centre d’art La Cuisine à Nègrepelisse. Édition des fauteuils et canapés « Barnaby » chez Sancal (Espagne) en 2014, conçus en collaboration avec Perrine Vigneron. En 2015, conception de diffuseurs de parfums pour Nature & Découvertes à l’occasion des vingt-cinq ans de la marque. En octobre 2015, conception de la signalétique du nouveau musée de l’Homme, en collaboration avec LM Communiquer & Associés.
The ‘Rooms’ system consists of three components: Area, Wall and Block. Each one proposes a modality for laying out space: Area circumscribes, Wall fragments, Block condenses. These components lay claim to their independence within the architectonic structure. Colombo showed that the object could exist ‘outside of itself’, in the more ample dimensions of an interior. And Belley takes a similar stand. Area, Wall and Block are free agents in habitat, and as such enable users to install new protocols for living. He proposes an alternative for configuring living spaces, using purpose-designed elements that delimit without freezing up, accomplish several functions, introduce space-within-space… In doing so he creates atypical typologies. “The idea is to condense the scale of the furnishing to incorporate modes of functioning that overlap from one room to several rooms: putting the living space into the furniture,” remarks the designer. Habitat becomes an environment that modulates to adapt to the lifestyles of the occupants, with real interaction between users and the things that surround them. A survey has found that French people move four or five times in their lifetime1. ‘Rooms’ anticipates this culture of movement: everything is modular, demountable, easily transportable. The ever increasing presence of digital devices in our everyday lives is not the sine qua non condition of Belley’s research project, which aims at “questioning the basic functions— sleeping, reading, working…—that will always be part of the mix regardless of sociological discourse on the shape of things to come.”

In 2009, he won an Agora scholarship grant for design to develop the ‘La fabrique végétale’ project launched with the La Cuisine art center at Nègrepelisse. Designed in collaboration with Perrine Vigneron, his ‘Barnaby’ range of armchairs and sofas was made by Sancal (Spain) in 2014. In 2015, for the 25th anniversary of the Nature & Découvertes label, he designed a series of perfume dispensers. In October 2015, in collaboration with LM Communiquer & Associés, he did the signage for the renovated Musée de l’Homme in Paris.
